Yesterday I posted in good old Facebook about an old cure for treating hysteria in women.
The comments were very funny….(read rude!)
The cure was a ‘medical massage’ (stroking of the clitoris).
Back in the 1800’s doctors used this method to cure ‘hysteria’ which seemed to
cover many female ailments!
I’m guessing sexual frustration was one of them!
Can you imagine the scene today?…….Ok Mrs Lee just lay back…..!!
Women back then didn’t have orgasms they had paroxysms which means a
‘sudden attack or outburst of a particular emotion or activity.’
Ha! I do that at the gym.
The word hysteria comes from the Greek word ‘hystero’ meaning womb.
In untreatable (!) cases of hysteria the womb was removed (hysterectomy)
as a way to bring about a cure.
In short this treatment was a huge success but the poor doctors where getting
hand pain from all their (eh hem) manual work.
It’s a hard life eh? ……ba dum cha!
To cut a long story short this was when vibrators were invented.
To save the male physicians poor hands!!
You can check out the full story here
When you orgasm you release a hormone called oxytocin – the hormone
of love and bonding
Oxytocin is a very good form of stress release. The more chronic stress
we are under the more disruption we cause our hormones leading to
weight loss, mood swings, menopause symptoms and depression.
So another tool for stress relief is getting more oxytocin, which
means more…………..HUGS!
Hugs also release oxytocin (it’s got to be at least 20 seconds)
but perhaps not as much fun as orgasm?
Orgasm also releases prolactin and dopamine….more about how
these hormones can improve your mood next week.
So, you have homework…..;-)

ps I watched a film called Hysteria last night which tells the story. Quite amusing 🙂
pps Apparently www.lovehoney.co.uk stock a good range of paroxysms inducing equipment (so my friend told me)
